BioCASE
The Biological Collection Access Service for Europe, BioCASE, is a transnational network of biological collections of all kinds. BioCASE enables widespread unified access to distributed and heterogeneous European collection and observational databases using open-source, system-independent software and open data standards and protocols.
BioCISE
BioCISE was a Concerted Action project funded by the European Commission whose aim was to survey of European biological collections
CBD
The Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty to sustain the rich diversity of life
CETAF
CETAF is a networked consortium of scientific institutions in Europe formed to promote training, research and understanding of systematic biology and palaeobiology, Together, CETAF institutions hold very substantial biological (zoological and botanical), palaeobiological, and geological collections and provide the resource for the work of thousands of researchers in a variety of scientific disciplines.

EDIT
The European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy, EDIT, is the collective answer of 27 leading European, North American and Russian institutions to a call of the European Commission, issued in 2004, for a Network of Excellence in Taxonomy for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research.
ENHSIN
ENHSIN is a Thematic Network funded through the European Commission’s Improving Human Potential Programme. The central aim of the European Natural History Specimen Information Network (ENHSIN) is to enable the development of a shared, interoperable infrastructure of natural history specimen databases in European institutions. Although exciting developments have been made in producing frameworks for connecting global species databases (Species 2000) and for providing access to the wider content of European natural history collections (BioCISE), there is, at present, no corresponding approach to facilitate access to specimen data. ENHSIN is intended to fill this lacuna.
FP6
Sixth Framework Programme : the Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development from 2002 till 2006 set up by the European Union (EU) in order to fund and promote European research and technological development. It was a collection of the actions at EU level. The main objective of FP6 was to contribute to the creation of the European Research Area by improving integration and co-ordination of research in Europe, which is so far largely fragmented.
FP7
Seventh Framework Programme: the Framework Programme for research and technological development is the European Union’s chief instrument for funding research over the period 2007 to 2013. It bundles all research-related EU initiatives together under a common roof playing a crucial role in reaching the goals of growth, competitiveness and employment.

Host
The researcher, curator, technician or librarian at your chosen TAF who will be responsible the scientific leadership (and training if requested) in preparation for and during your visit.
iBOL
International Barcode of Life project. Based on a simple, but powerful premise. It argues that sequence diversity in short, standardized gene regions (i.e. DNA barcodes) can provide a sophisticated tool for both the identification of known species and the discovery of new ones.
Infrastructure
The research facility (facilities) to which user groups are given transnational access under the project.

Transnational Access Facilities (TAF)
One of 10 national Taxonomic Access Facilities within the SYNTHESYS project which comprise one of more research facility.
User Selection Panel (USP)
The User Selection Panel shall be composed of international experts in the field, at least half of whom shall be independent and external to the staff of the Infrastructure. Selection Panel shall base its selection on scientific merit, taking into account that priority should be given to user groups who:
User
A researcher who visits one of the ten TAFs and is funded by SYNTHESYS IA
User group
A research team of one or more researchers requesting access to the infrastructure under the project. Each user group is led by a user group leader.
